The phrases that save you when you freeze.

Most people who fail the Norwegian oral exam don't fail on vocabulary. They fail because a question catches them off guard, their mind goes blank, and the silence stretches. These are the phrases that keep you talking through that moment — hear every buy-time phrase in a native Oslo voice, free.

Recovering out loud is a skill examiners listen for

A pause filled with «hmm, la meg tenke litt» is a completely different signal than a pause filled with silence. The first says you can hold a conversation in Norwegian even when you're stuck. The second gives the examiner nothing to grade. The Norskprøven muntlig is a conversation test, and staying in the conversation is the whole game.

You don't need all of these. Pick two or three, press play until the sound is in your ear, and say them out loud until they're automatic. That way they show up on exam day without being asked.

Buy time

When a question catches you off guard, buy a few seconds to think — out loud, in Norwegian, so you never freeze in silence.

Need a second

  • «Hmm, la meg tenke litt.»

Hmm, let me think a moment.

  • «Jeg må tenke litt.»

I have to think a little.

  • «La meg se…»

    Let me see…

React to the question

  • «Det er et godt spørsmål.»

    That's a good question.

  • «Det er et interessant spørsmål.»

    That's an interesting question.

Not sure, but attempt

  • «Jeg er ikke helt sikker, men jeg tror…»

    I'm not quite sure, but I think…

  • «Jeg har ikke så mye erfaring med det, men…»

I don't have much experience with that, but…

Be honest under pressure

  • «Jeg er litt nervøs, men jeg skal prøve.»

    I'm a little nervous, but I'll try.

  • «Unnskyld, jeg trenger et lite øyeblikk.»

Sorry, I need a little moment.

The rest of the kit

Buying time is one of four situations the survival kit covers. The other three are in the app, with native audio and the record-compare drill that makes them automatic.

Ask again

When you don't understand, ask. It's expected, it's not a mistake, and it keeps you talking.

Make them automatic before test day

Listening puts a phrase in your ear. To make it show up under pressure, you say it out loud, get checked that you'd be understood, and repeat until there's no gap between you and the native voice. That's the drill the app runs — on the full survival kit and all four exam tasks, at A2 and B1.
